Aberdeen Restaurant Week - Revolution: Review (Aberdeen)

Having visited Revolution in Aberdeen many-a-time, I'm no stranger to their large and varied cocktail menu. From the good ol' classics to cocktails served in kettles, their drinks offering is somewhat appealing to many.

But what many people don't know is that Revolution Aberdeen have a pretty decent food offering too. From pizza's to salads, to barbecue dishes to mezze boards, the menu is pretty inclusive and covers cuisine from every neck of the woods.

So you can imagine my delight when I found out that Rev was giving evening customers who ordered from the three-course Aberdeen Restaurant Week dinner menu a complimentary cocktail.

Heading along with a one of my old University pals last Friday, the two of us were hungry for good food and drinks, as well as a healthy serving of gossip. I hadn't seen Steph in ages so we were very excited about the occasion.

On arrival, we were shown to our seats - a lovely, cosy booth located in the outside area downstairs - and talked through the menu. Having not been to Rev in a while, it took me a few minutes to decide what cocktail to go for. I started with a Blue Movie, which Steph also picked. The Blue Movie was superb, it was light and refreshing and really just reminded me of a Blue Lagoon - which didn't surprise me as the cocktail featured Absolut Berri Acaí vodka, Blue Curaçao, lemon, apple juice and lemonade.

We were both feeling pretty ravenous having worked a long week. Whenever I dine out with someone else, I always try my hardest not to get the same as the other person. Both being in completely different moods for what kind of food we wanted, I was grateful she wasn't eyeing up the Buttermilk fried chicken strips the same way I was. Featuring three pieces of fried chicken strips, it was the big easy mayo that really captured my attention. The chicken was lovely and did the job, but the chipotle style mayonnaise was the one element that completely made that dish.

Steph had ordered the garlic flatbread which was topped with garlic butter and parsley. She really enjoyed it as she tore into it with her hands, however I would have personally liked a little more garlic butter on it - but I adore garlic and would use it in most dishes I cook at home. The flatbread was cooked well and was nice and fluffy on the inside.

We ordered a couple more cocktails at this point and tucked in.
After demolishing our starters, we caught up on all things work, life, and family. I'd been good friends with Steph at University and I alway enjoyed catching up with her and hearing how everything was going. We were both pretty ambitious at Uni (we still are) so there was  lot of reminiscing to be done having not seen each other in so long.

For mains, I decided to go for the glazed half roast chicken. The half roast chicken was served with  a gorgeous, rich chipotle BBQ sauce, chips and coleslaw. The chicken was lovely and moist and fell off the bone very well. The skin was a little crispy and was covered in the chipotle BBQ sauce which was also served on the side too. You can never have enough BBQ sauce in my opinion. As well as the chipotle BBQ sauce, you could order the hot sauce instead, however I stuck with the servers recommendation and it didn't disappoint.

Steph opted for the Sri Lankan chicken curry. A creamy, coconut and tomato sauce chicken curry with chilli, lemon grass and coriander which came served with jasmine rice and a wedge of fresh lime to squeeze over. Steph really enjoyed her curry, but the kick of chilli was quite strong for her so struggled to finish it once she'd eaten her rice which was a nice was to cool the dish down.
We ordered a few more cocktails, with my choices being the strawberry daiquiri  and a pornstar martini. The frozen strawberry daiquiri was created with Bacardi Carta Blanca rum, vanilla liqueur, strawberry purée, lime, grenadine and cranberry juice and came garnished with a strawberry sweet - my fav! The pornstar martini with SKYY passionfruit, Absolut Vanilla vodka, passionfruit purée, sugar, orange juice, and came topped with half of a passion fruit to garnish. The drink also came with a Freixenet prosesso chaser - although I usually drink it before the cocktail to cleanse the palette.
Moving on to desserts, we were both eyeing up the warm chocolate brownie originally, that was until Steph spotted a chocolate brownie sundae which was a huge game changer for her.

The brownie sundae boasted lots of ice cream, bourbon brownie pieces, whipped cream, chocolate sauce and was topped with rainbow drops. It all went so well together and Steph loved the brownie pieces.

My brownie was super soft and gooey on the inside, and was beautifully crisp on the outside. It melted in my mouth and was hands down my favourite dish of the meal - even though I did love the BBQ chicken. It was bursting full of chocolate and the vanilla ice cream which came served on the side went extremely well with it and really complimented the richness of the brownies. It was exactly what any chocolate lover would want out of a warm brownie dessert.
Revolution was bouncing that night - the music was fantastic and everyone seemed in the mood to party. Having come straight from work, neither Steph or I were dressed for the occasion, and as temped as we were we ended up passing on the opportunity to dance the night away. We surrendered our table to a group of girls who were out for the night and made our way out of the venue.

Everyone was having a great time and I must admit, I was pretty jealous of them. Full up with fine food and delicious drinks, we headed home for the night - not before planning our next trip out of course.

During the Aberdeen Restaurant Week project, Revolution are running both a two-course lunch and a three-course dinner. The three-course dinner also comes with a cocktail included in the offer which is a great way for them to showcase their food and their drinks offering. Revolution also run a number of different offers throughout the week too, so it's worth checking online what offers they have on all the time.

Happy dining out folks, and good luck picking a cocktail - there's just too many good ones to choose from!

Revolution Aberdeen: A slice of the action at new menu launch

It's been a while since I've indulged in a good pizza, and it seems over the past week I've been invited along to three different pizza menu launches - all of which went down rather well.

For me, eating out is all about the full experience. Great freshly cooked food, delicious drinks, a welcoming atmosphere, and a restaurant you could happily spend all day in. So, when I was invited along to try out Revolution Aberdeen's new menu, which boasts an incredible pizza offering, I was there in a flash and ended up staying much longer than anticipated - obviously.

Inviting my blogging gals along, we sat outside on the terrace on a beautiful Autumnal afternoon awaiting the arrival of our pizza's. Being a menu showcase Revolution Aberdeen had provided us with the full pizza selection (two of every pizza), showing off their new flavours and enticing our tastebuds to try something different. With six different pizza's to choose from, we immediately dived in to try them out.

First up was The Hot Italian Pizza. With pepperoni, cured ham, roquito peppers, garlic mushrooms, tomato sauce, topped with fresh mozzarella and rocket, this was the spiciest pizza on the menu. A little warm for me usually, I actually really enjoyed the pizza. Yes the roquito peppers left a warm sensation in my mouth, but the ham, mushrooms and cheese contrasted the heat, making it extremely enjoyable to consume.
I'm not a massive fan of Moroccan food or lamb, however the Lamb Baba Ganoush pizza was lovely and fragrant and was not quite what I had initially anticipated. Featuring ground lamb, baba ganoush, rose harissa, fresh mozzarella, feta, crème fraîche, coriander and pomegranate, it was surprisingly delicious. This pizza is definitely something my mum would adore - she loves lamb so this is right up her street.
Next I delved into The Beet Goes On vegetarian pizza. Unsure to begin with due to the fact there was no meat on it at all, it was probably the most unusual tasting pizza as I'd never had artichoke puree before, which was actually pretty tasty. Topped with goat's cheese, beetroot, fresh mozzarella, cherry tomatoes, roasted peppers, basil and parmesan, it's definitely something I would order again,
Onto the traditional margherita, as you'd expect there's not really much I can tell you about this pizza, well that is unless you've never had a margherita pizza - which I'm very doubtful of...

A tomato sauce based pizza topped with mozzarella and basil, there's not much you can really go wrong with for this pizza. The mozzarella tasted lovely and fresh, and the pizza dough was cooked beautifully.

I also tried out the Fresco pizza which was extremely more-ish. Featuring cured ham, feta, kalamanta olives (which I removed as I hate the damn things), fresh smoked mozzarella, balsamic onions (mouth-wateringly good), rocket and olive oil - this pizza offering was spot on.
Last but not least, the showstopper for me was without a doubt the Asian Satay Chicken pizza. Lathered wth dollops of the satay sauce sporadically all over the pizza, this was pizza heaven. With pulled chicken covering the pizza, homemade satay sauce, peppers, mozzarella, cucumber, spring onions, coriander and lime on top, this was my favourite pizza and one of the best I had tried in a long time. Squeezing the fresh lime onto my slice created a whole new burst of flavour, and was so good I ended up having one or two more. #sorrynotsorry

The pizza's, which launch on Wednesday 12 October, start from £7.95 and are the perfect size for sharing, or devouring solo, and with their variety of dishes there's something for everyone on the new menu. Yes the flavours of the pizzas are a little more adventurous, but I think that's what I loved about them. I'm a simple creature and smother most of my pizza's in BBQ sauce, however, found the tastes of these pizzas were perfect, and didn't need drowned in sauce. Although if there's more of that satay sauce going I am game!

Alongside the pizzas, we were also treated to a few cocktails of our choice, which obviously went down a treat too. I opted for a cherry mojito in what I can only envision as a pick n' mix sweetie bag - why else do you think I chose it - and also a Blank Canvas cocktail (vodka based) with sour berry flavour in a pipette. Anything that looks a little wacky to me, and that I can play with (be that food or drinks) is a definite for me.
The best thing about Revolution is that on Monday, you can get 50% off all food on the menu which is great. Plus, you can also save 25% seven days a week with a Revolution card - ask in the bar for more deets on this if you'd like to get your hands on one. Pizza really has never tasted so good, especially at that price!

A huge thank you to the team at Revolution Aberdeen for hosting us and for providing the pizzas and cocktails for us to try. I'll definitely be back. In fact, see you next Monday!

Revolution Aberdeen: picnic basket review

Two weekends ago I was kindly invited along to Revolution Bars Aberdeen to sample the very first Revolution picnic basket ahead of its official launch last week. That's right, I was the first person in Aberdeen to try this out, so as you can imagine, I really didn't have a clue what I was walking into, which made the experience that much more fun!

Arriving on a beautiful sunny Sunday afternoon - yes I kid you not, sunshine in Aberdeen and it's not even July yet - I brought along my boyfriend, my sister and her boyfriend to tuck into what was much needed hangover food in the form of a cute, quirky picnic.

Since refurbishing recently, it is clear Revolution Aberdeen wants to create the atmosphere of a picnic in the park (conveniently the bar looks out onto Union Terrace Gardens). The concept is fun, and is something different, offering the people of Aberdeen a unique picnic experience in a well-established bar without having to worry about preparing or tidying up. Sounds like picnic heaven.

Deciding to pace myself, I opted for a virgin Bloody Mary, whilst my boyfriend also decided on a mocktail. With our heads sore from the prosecco we devoured the previous night I was excited to get tucked in to some awesome food.
Unbeknown to me, two bottles of prosecco landed on our table (this was part of the picnic ) and I immediately liked the look of how things were starting off. With a bottle per couple, we decided to only open one initially, seeing how brave we were toasting to a glorious day of beautiful sunshine and fine food.
When the picnic basket arrived on our table we were very intrigued to see what was inside. We had all been guessing what may or may not be in the basket, and I can safely say all four of us were wrong in our predictions.

What you can expect to find in your picnic basket:
  • Freshly baked baguettes
  • A selection of cold meats
  • A selection of cheeses
  • Houmous
  • Sundried tomatoes and nocellara olives
  • Potato salad
  • Selection of condiments including some beautiful chutney and grapes
  • One bottle of Bolla prosecco (rosé )
You can also add a desserts package for £5 extra per person including brownie, cheesecake and strawberries and cream.

Once we had pulled everything out of the basket, inspecting every single item with such curiosity, we were digging into our picnic within no time (after I had paused consumption intermittently whilst I got happy snappy - the story of a blogger's guest's life). The bread was delicious, and still warm inside which meant the butter and cheese melted perfectly, which made the mini sandwiches we were all assembling that much more divine. The selection of meats and cheese's was also very generous, as well as varied. I'm not a massive fan of blue cheese so I avoided this after initially tasting a small piece, however, everything else tasted extremely fresh and was more than enough for the four of us.

The chutney was the show stopper for me, as was the potato salad. This simplistic, yet flavoursome lunch was exactly what the doctor had ordered and was very filling which surprised me as initially I thought the four of us would have easily have eaten the lot, my mistake. The only thing I would have added more of was the baguette, due to the fact it's the one main component of the lunch you use as a base in creating mini tasters of everything. However, when we asked for more bread this was no fuss whatsoever and the waitress at the time gathered our recommendations and fed this back to the chef immediately, which was very reassuring.

Alongside the picnic, we also indulged in one or two of Revolution Aberdeen's cocktails. I decided on Absolute Soup which features Absolut vodka, Teihenné coconut schnapps, apple juice and grapefruit served in an iconic Andy Warhol tin can, and my sisters boyfriend chose the salted caramel mudshake with Stoli vodka, white chocolate and salted caramel popcorn flavoured vodkas - half and half, and chocolate sauce topped with whipped cream and more chocolate sauce, super muddy.
At £25 per person, based on two people sharing the picnic concept is hella fun and also rather tasty too. The would be the perfect starting point for going out at the weekend, or even just a relaxing afternoon basking in the sun with your friends enjoying a glass or two of prosecco indulging in your picnic. With spring in full flow and summer just around the corner, I can guarantee you'll want to try this wee beauty out.

A massive thank you to Aicha from Revolution Aberdeen who invited me down to enjoy the perfect Sunday picnic overlooking the park. A great concept for those looking to go out for lunch and a few drinks with friends, I'll definitely be getting my girlfriends involved in this next time we go out for a few!
