Netherkirkgate & why it's getting lit up

Aberdeen has been in slight turmoil since the oil and gas crash last year. We've been frantically trying to keep our heads above water, hoping and praying the damn price of a barrel would increase, but alas, more jobs have been cut and more doors have been shut.

It's a sad day when any business has to close, you know how hard these business' owners work, putting everything they have into their business but with bills to pay, staff to pay and the people not going out as much, it's difficult for even the most successful of business' to survive.

Netherkirkgate is one of Aberdeen's hidden gems, nestled perfectly just off of busy Union Street. A diamond in the rock, this secret gathering of new business start-up's seems to be growing quite rapidly. With numerous new business' launching in the area in the space of a year, a whole new community has emerged from the undergroud.

With supporting local a big focus in the city, I've listed some awesome business' which reside in Netherkirkgate, and why they're kicking ass and killing it on the local scene.

1. Linton & Mac

Since launching last September these guys have been imperative in putting Netherkirkgate on the map. Redefining the traditional hair salon and bringing a seriously savvy Instagram game to Aberdeen, we've been following the success of both Linton, and Mac, watching as they blow up the hairdressing scene. True ambassadors for supporting local - they get local business' involved in their business all the time - these guys have not only created over 25 new jobs in the space of a year, they've also given us an awesome new place to chill out with our besties whilst we get our bangs cut.

Young, budding entrepreneurs who proactively celebrate their success by sharing their journey with others, these guys are one's to keep an eye on. Destined for big things, this duo are killing it on the business front.

2. The Cat in the Window Cafe

Bringing a totally new concept to Aberdeen, The Cat in the Window cafe has been a real success in pushing new trends into the city. Never before have we had a cat cafe, but by god you Aberdonian's are delighted we have one. Supporting other local business' by outsourcing some of their baked goods from the cupcake Queen herself, Cupcakes by Jo, these guys know exactly what their cutomers want and know how to deliver. 

From hosting unique yoga classes in the cafe, to inviting guests to lounge around for an hour with some furry friends and a fine cuppa, the Cat in the Window cafe is another business knocking it out of the park. (You can read my previous review of my experience here)

3. Unit 51

Opening last Saturday with Let it Bleed putting on a sick show, this is one place I am dying to visit. The newest live music venue to hit Aberdeen and just across from The Tunnels, this is another awesome venue which is guarenteed to get the crowds of Aberdeen jumpin' for joy.

4. Mad Penguin

New kids on the block, the guys behind Mad Penguin are all about suporting local. With locally sourced ingredients at the heart of their offering, these artisan gelateria and makers of delicious coffee are a must visit for me. So much so, I'm actually going for a wee tour of the place this weekend - super stoked for that. They're fresh off the press and making a name for themselves in the area, already partnering with craft beer giants, BrewDog, creating some beerutiful ice cream. 

Yes it's cold outside, and yes it's Autumn, but who doesn't eat ice cream all year round!? Pop in and show your support to these guys who are just starting out. I've heard great things about their coffee offering and they look like they make some bangin' gelato. Two words, yes please!

5.  Filthy Gorgeous

Launching this Saturday (with Scottish DJ Yogi Haughton kicking off celerations at 9pm), these guys are brand new to Netherkirkgate and are already talk of the town with their toasted marshmallow fries - you read that correct, toasted marshmallows on fries. With burgers and hot dogs on the menu, with some buttermilk fried chicken chucked in there for good measure, this venue is shaping up to be the burger joint of the moment in Netherkirkgate.

And for dessert? Bacon glazed doughuts or mammoth milkshakes, your choice. Oh, and did I mention the batched cocktails and shots they have on offer? To say I'm looking forward to trying out these guys is an understatement. Wishing them the best of luck for a party-filled weekend of opening celebrations, featuring many, many hangovers.

6. The City Bar & Diner

Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, there is something to suit all tastes at The City Bar & Diner. With some fab coffee syrups like caramel, gingerbread, and their take on popular pumpkin to indulge in whilst sipping on your hot brew, you'll want to take sanctuary in the diner all day.

All the meals are home cooked with afternoon tea and delicious home bakes available too. It's comfortable, it's homely, and even better, it's local. Oh, and did I mention it was kid-friendly too!?

So go on you rascals, head out there and enjoy those local businesses which are right there on your doorstep. They will love you for it.

Linton & Mac: Nail bar experience

Stop what you're doing.  Sassy nails are coming, and boy is the nail game strong with this one.

Since bursting onto the Aberdeen scene just over six months ago, local hair salon Linton & Mac has been making waves in the industry, welcoming some of the hairdressing industry's top professionals to the salon.

Established by creative directors, Joanna MacDonald and Jennifer Linton, the duo have progressed the business excessively, adding a number of new salon services as customer demand increases. 

A few weeks ago I was invited along to the salon to try out the its nail bar, and obviously I couldn't resist getting my sass on and taking them up on the offer immediately. Having already experienced the salon's style bar I was really excited to try out another service the salon has on offer. As well as a nail bar Linton & Mac also boasts a make up artist, their infamous style bar, hairdressing services and a brow bar too! And by the looks of things, I'm slowly making my way around the whole salon!

Welcoming me one Saturday afternoon, Kayleigh, Linton & Mac's resident nail artist, took me to her station where her new funky nail bar was situated, fixed me a drink from the refreshments menu and offered me a selection of quirky tasters of popcorn, popping candy and cashew nuts incase I was feeling peckish. Talking me through my appointment, Kayleigh discussed the new IBX treatment she recently brought into the salon, telling me about the wonders it would work for my nails whilst chatting me through the different nail styles and fashionable colour trends.

Not the place for someone as indecisive as I, the nail colour choice available for customers at Linton & Mac is second to none. With over 50 colours to chose from there's something for everyone. Opting for a dark purple/burgundy colour I was still spoiled for choice and managed to narrow my decision down to three potential finalists. Bella's Vampire, Majestic and a dark grey colour (just to mix it up) called Metro. 

Before starting my acrylics appointment, Kayleigh offered me the IBX Repair treatment, in order to help the growth and conditioning of my nails. IBX Repair is used to repair severe nail damage and sets the stage for growth. Not only does it toughen the upper layers of the nail plate, the IBX treatment also fills up deep grooves resulting in a smoother nail plate too. The natural colour of the nail and the appearance of the nails is also improved as well as the strength and condition of nails, which in turn will help nails grow stronger and longer.

My nails were in a terrible state before my appointment, however, Kayleigh reassured me about the treatments and I immediately saw my nails transform from the worn out, dull, lifeless state they were in to moisturised, healthy looking nails.

I had decided (with some guidance) to get a set of acrylics which Kayleigh sculpted onto my nail freehand. I've only ever had this done once so was a little sceptical in how the end result would turn out, but in the hands (quite literally) of experienced nail artist, Kayleigh, I would definitely recommend this way of applying acrylics due to them not damaging my nails as much as previous acrylics have. She suggested I go for an almond shape, slightly pointed, as I wanted to make my fingers look longer and not so stumpy. She did a great job and chatted away to me throughout the whole appointment which I really enjoyed. I can't keep my mouth shut for five minutes to it was reassuring to have someone so friendly carrying out a longer appointment. The colour turned out fantastic after two or three quotes, which I would say is pretty standard in developing any nail colour, and I was extremely pleased with the overall result.

With my claws ready to paint the town red, I left Linton & Mac a new woman, with nails so on fleek even Bey would be stopping in the street (insert sassy emoji girl here), I strutted my way out of the salon to meet my friends for coffee to show off my fabulous new talons.

Recommending Linton & Mac is far too easy for me. From the homely welcome at reception, to the carefully developed customer experience undertaken by the friendly staff, to the high quality products and services they provide, the salon really has nailed all aspects of its offering.

So if you fancy pampering yourself and want your nails on fleek, then definitely get in contact with Kayleigh. Not only does she offer acrylics, gel nails and manicures, she also offers some cute nail art and has an incredible selection of never-ending colours which are definitely worth checking out. Prices are varied for different treatments with some treatments costing as little as £15.

Photo shoot fresh

Recently I was invited to a closed photo shoot by my good friends at Linton and Mac, Aberdeen's latest fashion forward hair salon, which seems to be taking the city by storm. The innovative duo behind the salon venture, creative directors Jennifer Linton and Joanna MacDonald, both ooze talent and extreme enthusiasm for their industry, so I was really looking forward to seeing them both in action.

Although I've been to a number of photo calls/shoots I've never actually worked on a shoot which involves the full shebang (hair, clothing, make up, models etc.) so I was pretty excited about this.

On-shoot I quickly realised how much time and effort really goes into pulling these things together. Saying that, I've decided to pull together five top tips for anyone participating in a photo shoot anytime soon, they will help you get you through those tough times, trust me.

1. Positive vibes

One negative nelly really can ruin the day for everyone. It's really important for everyone to work together in order to achieve the end goal you're all hoping for. If its your first time working with a group of people break the ice and organise to have breakfast or lunch together so everyone can bond. All for one and one for all as they say!

2. A good photographer and a team with a creative eye

Getting the right shot and ensuring the models look the part is really dependent on 1. the capabilities and skills of the photographer and 2. the team of creatives working alongside, ensuring everything is in place for the shot. Having an enthusiastic, inspired team, makes all the difference. From giving different shoot location ideas, to helping assist with capturing the ideal lighting, everyone on the shoot plays an important role in obtaining the ultimate frame.

3. Food and drink is a must
I can't stress enough how important this is. Make sure you have a stash of snacks on-set for the team and eat a substantial lunch. Photo shoots are long, tiring days, and it's important to stay on top of your game. Regular intervals and breaks will also help everyone stay energised and motivated.

4. Experienced models 
Working with individuals who know how to "work-it" makes everything 100 times easier. The more comfortable and confident they are in their abilities, the edgier and more out-going they are on set. Although Sam was only signed to his agency seven months ago (I wouldn't have believed it if he hadn't told me himself), he and Megan, who have worked together on a number of occasions, clearly knew what they were doing, and it was refreshing to see how at ease they were working together; it really was beautiful to witness.

5. The ultimate glam squad

Lucky for us we were spoiled with an abundance of behind the scenes talent alongside our experienced models. The team worked for hours, complimenting one another's work as we went, lending a hand where need be. From stylish, fashionable clothing, to stunning make up by local MUA, Abigail Westwood; every element was built up to compliment the final piece and focal point of the shoot - the hair. Blessed with the magic touch of tag-team duo, Linton & Mac, the two ladies worked away,  creating a number of different looks for the specific shoot. After working hours on end in the salon and battling with the elements outside, the final result was totally worth it. Job done.
